CCA Leader Training for Student Leaders in Singapore
CCA leaders lead their peers every week. They run warm-ups, organise training, settle disagreements and keep a team going through a long season. Most were chosen because they are good at the activity itself. Leading the people doing it is a different skill, and it can be learnt.
Our CCA leader training prepares captains, chairpersons, vice-chairpersons and committee members for the part of the role that happens between the drills.
What CCA Leaders Practise
Leading an activity safely and clearly
CCA leaders learn to prepare an activity properly: its purpose, the size of the group, the venue, safety and the mood of the team. They write their own instructions, give them to their peers, run the activity and lead a short reflection at the end. Every leader facilitates at least once and receives feedback from peers and coaches.
Building a team that pulls together
Through team challenges, CCA leaders see that a team is only as strong as the way it supports its weakest member, that a clear picture of the goal matters more than individual roles, and that attitudes can lift a team up or pull it down.
Handling conflict before it grows
Disagreements in a CCA are normal. CCA leaders work through a building challenge in which every member holds information the others cannot see, and experience how quickly miscommunication turns into frustration. They then learn the different ways people respond to conflict, practise choosing a response, and discuss whether a conflict was bad or simply poorly managed.
Speaking to the team
From a pre-training briefing to a talk before a competition, CCA leaders practise speaking with their voice, words and body working together, and making sure every member knows what to do next.
Why CCA Leadership Matters Beyond the CCA
We believe CCAs are not about collecting points or meeting new people. They are about self-understanding. A student who learns to lead a CCA team well learns how they respond under pressure, how they treat others when things go wrong and what kind of leader they want to become.
What It Looks Like in a Workshop
At Northbrooks Secondary School, CCA leaders trained in their own group, separate from councillors and class leaders, so the coach could use examples from CCA rehearsals and training. Each CCA leader left with a personal action plan: one goal, three actions for the next four weeks and their own response to a difficulty they expected to face. Every participant in the CCA leaders group rated their coach's clarity 5 out of 5. Read the Northbrooks case study.
How Our CCA Leader Workshops Run
Every session follows the Leaven Learning Cycle, our adaptation of David Kolb's experiential learning cycle. Students experience an activity, reflect on it, draw out the insight, decide on a behaviour and see its consequence.

Questions Schools Ask About CCA Leader Training
Can leaders from different CCAs train together?
Yes. Mixing sports, uniformed groups, performing arts and clubs works well, because leaders learn from situations they have not met yet. We can also group them by CCA type.
Is this for new or outgoing CCA leaders?
Mainly new leaders, at the start of their term. Outgoing leaders can join to hand over what they have learnt.
How many CCA leaders can attend one session?
Workshops suit a single CCA committee up to a whole cohort of CCA leaders. We plan the number of coaches to the group size.
