Prefect Leadership Training for Singapore Schools

A prefect badge tells the school who has been trusted. It does not yet tell the prefect how to carry that trust when no teacher is watching.

Our prefect training helps newly appointed and serving prefects understand what the role asks of them, and practise it before they need it. Every workshop is built around activities, not lectures, because that is how young people learn and remember.

What Prefects Need to Learn First

Prefects are leaders in a very visible way. Their peers watch how they behave long before they listen to what they say. So our prefect training starts with the responsibilities that come with the role, drawn from Level 1, Responsibilities, of the 4R Leadership Framework.

Being the example

Prefects try to build a long line of dominoes within a time limit, and discover how one careless move undoes the work of everyone else. The debrief turns that into a question every prefect has to answer: if others follow what I do, what am I showing them?

Representing the school

A prefect represents the school at assemblies, events and in public. Through short picture and scenario activities, students look at how first impressions are formed and what good and poor representation looks like to the people around them.

Being a respectful peer

Prefects still sit in class with the students they lead. Students practise encouraging a team that is falling short, using kind and specific words, and responding to a peer in a conflict without talking down to them.

Knowing yourself

Students identify their own strengths and weaknesses, so they can lead from what they do well and ask for help where they need it.

Trust Is Built by Follow Through

We believe trust comes from actions that back up what a student said they would do. A prefect who keeps small promises, turns up on time and follows through on duties earns more authority than one who only speaks well on stage.

That is why every prefect workshop ends with a Leadership Roadmap: each prefect writes down what they will do in their role over the coming weeks, so teachers can review it with them afterwards. The workshop finishes; the commitment carries on.

How Our Prefect Workshops Run

Every session follows the Leaven Learning Cycle, our adaptation of David Kolb's experiential learning cycle: students experience an activity, reflect on it, draw out the insight, decide on a behaviour and see its consequence. Theory sits inside the reflection, not in front of it.

For primary school prefects

Primary 4 to 6 prefects learn through short, hands-on challenges and simple handouts, with plenty of movement. One primary school has run its Primary 5 prefect training with us six times since 2018.

For secondary school prefects

Secondary prefects go further into representation, handling difficult peers and leading duties on their own, and can continue into Levels 2 to 4 of the 4R Leadership Framework (Relationships, Results and Reproduction) on our student leadership programmes.

Formats

  • Half-day workshops of 3 to 4 hours for a newly appointed prefect board

  • Prefect camps over a full day

  • Multi-session programmes across a term

  • Formats designed around your school calendar

Every programme is customised with the teacher in charge, so what prefects practise matches the duties they actually hold.

Questions Schools Ask About Prefect Training

When is the best time to run prefect training?

Soon after appointment, before the first duties begin, so prefects start with clear expectations rather than learning them by trial and error.

Can prefects train together with other student leaders?

Yes. Some schools combine prefects with student councillors or CCA leaders. We adjust the scenarios so each group practises situations it will meet.

Do you train primary and secondary prefects?

Yes. Content and activities are designed separately for each level.
