Student Council Leadership Training for Singapore Schools
Student councillors are trusted to run events, represent their cohort and carry ideas from students to the school. Most of them want to do it well. What they often lack is a method for turning good intentions into a plan that works.
Our student council training gives councillors that method, and the practice to use it, in a single workshop or across a term.
The Three Things a Student Council Does
Plans and runs projects
School events, campaigns and initiatives are projects, with goals, tasks, resources and deadlines. Councillors learn the PIE approach to project management, Plan, Implement and Evaluate, by using it under pressure rather than reading about it.
Runs meetings and discussions
A council meeting only works when everyone contributes and the group reaches a decision. Councillors practise setting the purpose of a discussion, drawing out quieter members, asking questions that move the group forward and closing with a clear outcome.
Speaks for the student body
Councillors address assemblies, brief teachers and present proposals. They learn to speak with clarity and to check that the message has landed, so their peers know what to do next.
How Councillors Learn to Plan a Project
We teach planning through experience first. Councillors start with a time-pressured team simulation before any framework is introduced, and see for themselves what happens when a team acts without clear objectives or a realistic view of its resources.
Then they work through the planning steps one at a time, each applied straight away on a worksheet:
setting objectives the whole team can see
brainstorming and choosing between ideas
breaking a project into smaller tasks
knowing the resources available
approaching teachers and outside partners
preparing a contingency plan for when things go wrong
The workshop closes with councillors presenting a review of their own team's work: what worked, what did not, and what they would change. At Woodlands Ring Secondary School, 28 councillors and peer support leaders went through this in one four-and-a-half-hour session. Read the Woodlands Ring case study.
Leading Meetings That People Want to Attend
A good speaker can still lose a group. Leading a council discussion is less about having the loudest voice and more about making sure everyone has a turn to speak, including the members who would rather stay quiet.
Councillors practise facilitation in small groups, take turns to lead, and receive feedback from their peers and coaches. At Northbrooks Secondary School, Secondary 3 councillors and class leaders practised exactly this alongside CCA leaders. Read the Northbrooks case study.
How Our Student Council Workshops Run
Every session follows the Leaven Learning Cycle, our adaptation of David Kolb's experiential learning cycle. Students experience an activity, reflect on it, draw out the insight, decide on a behaviour and see its consequence.
Formats
Half-day workshops of 3 to 4 hours for a new council
Multi-session programmes, for example three sessions spread across a term
Council camps and orientation days
Formats designed around your school calendar
We work with the teacher in charge of the council to match the workshop to the projects and events your councillors will actually run.
Questions Schools Ask About Student Council Training
Is this for new or experienced councillors?
Both. New councils focus on planning and meetings; experienced councils apply the tools to a project they are already running.
Can councillors bring a real school project to the workshop?
Yes, and we encourage it. Working on a real event makes the planning tools stick.
Can the council train together with prefects or CCA leaders?
Yes. We adjust the scenarios so each group practises the situations it will face.
